First, the most powerful two things you can do are to bring your whole true genuine self to work every day and to trust your instincts. Next, focus on the things you can control: your attitude, your effort, your self-development, your accountability, how you treat people, and your voice. Use your voice to advocate for yourself (if you don’t, why should anyone else?) and to be an advocate, mentor, and ally to others – especially women. Build your confidence to push yourself to speak up, ask questions, and share your thoughts and opinions – even when you are the only woman in the room!

Develop a fearless mindset and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone, take risks, challenge the status quo, and don’t limit yourself to opportunities. A successful and rewarding professional journey does not always mean a straight path.

Lastly, don’t be so hard on yourself! – tomorrow is another day.

I have been in this industry a long time, and changes don’t happen overnight or by chance. Over the last couple of years, I have seen more intentional focused conversations and initiatives around DEI to promote and foster an inclusive environment, especially around women representation in leadership roles. And even more importantly, in my opinion, more men in senior leadership positions are now advocating DEI and championing the unique skills and perspectives women bring to leadership roles. Change cannot happen without male advocacy and them being part of the solutions. There is still much more work and progress that needs to happen.

For more than 65 years, our people have been the cornerstone of our accomplishments and success at MGIC. Having a culture and environment where all co-workers feel a sense of belonging, all ideas and thoughts are heard and valued, and everyone is represented at all levels is key to our continued long-term success. Women in leadership roles and being intentional about creating opportunities for women and other underrepresented groups is important to us and promotes gender equality and diversity but also drives innovation, better business outcomes, improves performance, and allows us to better serve our customers, employees, and the communities we serve.

The good news – women continue to have an increasing impact on the housing market, specifically single women. To better serve and support women borrowers and to best understand the needs of all borrowers, as an industry, we need to have a more inclusive and diverse workforce, especially gender equality. An industry can’t effectively serve women if they are not represented in key leadership and decision-making roles.

In addition, as an industry, we need to continue to focus on affordable, sustainable, and equitable housing. This includes evaluating existing products and services to ensure we are meeting the needs of all borrowers and not settling and accepting a “one-size” fits all. We need to work together to ensure there is a level playing field and women homebuyers have access to valuable information and education unique to women and potential challenges they may face. Having access to the right information and education will empower women to make thoughtful and knowledgeable decisions and will also give them the tools to empower other women.
