Lindsey Johnson Named USMI President & Executive Director

Marks New Phase for Mortgage Insurance Trade Association

U.S. Mortgage Insurers (USMI) today named Lindsey Johnson as USMI’s President and Executive Director. Johnson, a former senior member of the Senate Banking Committee staff, is currently a Director on PwC’s public policy team.

“Lindsey will be a superb leader for USMI,” said USMI Chairman Rohit Gupta. “Her appointment marks a new phase for USMI’s mission to inform policymakers on the need to create a strong, stable housing finance system backed by private capital that enables access to housing finance for borrowers while protecting taxpayers.”

“Lindsey brings tremendous talent and energy to the task, and her deep knowledge of the housing finance system and extensive government experience make her ideally suited for this important role,” Gupta continued. Gupta is also President and CEO of Genworth Mortgage Insurance.

Johnson said, “I am honored and excited by this new responsibility. MI has been an essential part of the fabric of housing finance for nearly 60 years, providing access to housing finance for borrowers while protecting taxpayers. Now, the MI industry is well positioned to do more to help ensure a sustainable housing finance system backed by private capital, including greater up front risk sharing.”

“As policymakers focus on these important issues, USMI is uniquely positioned to rigorously make the case to legislative, regulatory, and Administration audiences about the value of MI to borrowers and taxpayers. I look forward to serving USMI’s member companies, and will work tirelessly to improve the public policy environment for MI.”

USMI is comprised of six U.S. mortgage insurance companies – Arch MI, Essent, Genworth, MGIC, National MI, and Radian—and began operations in March 2014. The organization is open to all active U.S. MI companies.

Currently, Lindsey serves as a Director for PwC’s Government, Regulatory and Public Policy team, where she engages policymakers on key public policy issues that impact the firm. Prior to joining PwC, Lindsey was the Minority Staff Director for the Senate Banking Committee’s National Security and International Trade and Finance (NSITF) Subcommittee, and served as Senior Policy Advisor to Senator Mark Kirk (R-IL), focusing on noteworthy banking, housing finance reform, and insurance legislation.

Before her service to the Senate, Lindsey worked for the Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta (FHLBank Atlanta) in D.C., representing the Bank before policymakers at the highest levels on Capitol Hill, in the regulatory agencies, as well as the Administration. Lindsey worked on housing finance reform legislative efforts and on legislative issues impacting FHLBank Atlanta in the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, among others, as well as on key legislative matters at the state level.

Lindsey received an MBA from Georgetown University.
